Rooting HTC Desire
« on: January 01, 2014, 09:08:44 PM »
I finally decided to upgrade my 2 year old Optimus V. I realize there aren't many ROM options (are there any?) for the Desire but I would like to root. Any suggestions (or links) on the steps need to unlock and root the desire?

I found this site http://roothtc.com/our-office/. Opinions or comments?

Thanks in advance.

Not sure about the link you provided but the phone can be rooted. The only active thread I've found so far is here...  http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=47495686

First step is to head over to http://www.htcdev.com and go thru the bootloader unlock process.

Then grab cwm recovery from this link..  http://goo.im/devs/philz_touch/CWM_Advanced_Edition/zara, this is by Philz so thank him at the main thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2201860

Flash the recovery via fastboot, boot into recovery and flash this file to get root..  http://download.clockworkmod.com/superuser/superuser.zip

Don't try to remove any system apps though as the Desire has write protection so anything you remove will be rewritten after reboot. You can however freeze any system apps you don't use. Once kernel source is released and someone can create a unsecure kernel this will change.

I assumed you knew how to flash a recovery with fastboot but if not I'd be happy to type you a guide once I get home or you can find a guide online.

Thanks for the reply and links. I came across that recovery after posting here. I haven't messed with fast boot previously but I am sure I can figure it out. If you got the time to write up the steps that would be even better.  :D

The Desire 601 is a huge upgrade over the Optimus V. This is my first look at Sense and I am pleasantly surprised. It seems like a well made phone and I haven't come across any problems. The speakers are loud and there is plenty of storage for my needs. I like the option for MicroSD expansion. The Battery life seems decent and the battery is replaceable.

The Desire 601 is (supposedly) getting an upgrade to KitKat 1st quarter of 2014. I was wondering if rooting now would cause any problem receiving over the air upgrades?

I have actually found that rooting my phone has prevented me from installing the current OTA update. Ive only had the phone a week and when I got it I forgot to check. It's now prompting me to install an update but it fails. Once you root it sets a tampered flag in hboot. It can be reset but upon reboot it sees that you've modified the system partition by writing the superuser binaries. It then sets the tampered flag again. To install and OTA you must reflash stock boot, stock recovery and relock bootloader. If you do this with your system partition modified it sets a security warning in hboot and you are not allowed to boot rom or recovery. If you unlock bootloader again it will then allow you to boot normally but not install the ota.

I'm sure there's a way around it but I haven't messed with it a lot yet. I don't have a backup of the phone before rooting because my sdcard went bad and I lost my data. I'm sure if a preroot backup is restored this wouldn't be an issue but until I get a stock backup I won't know.

I have received a notification for OTA update but have not yet responded. Do you have any info on what this update covers?

Thanks!

I haven't installed it yet so not 100% sure. I know looking at the ota it looks like it contains a few app updates and a firmware update. I'd install it if you are thinking about rooting.

I went ahead and installed the update. Any changes aren't immediately apparent.

I checked out the links you provided. The boot-loader un-lock process looks easy enough. Flashing recovery via Fastboot looks easy as well. Once rooting a Desire can you easily "un-root" to receive future OTA updates/upgrades? With 1st quarter Kit Kat upgraded rumored, I'm wondering if I should hold off rooting.

It's supposed to be pretty easy. Just make sure once you install recovery you do a backup before installing the superuser zip. That way you have a stock unrooted backup to restore. I'll get you a link on the return to stock thread as soon as I get a chance
